Okay, okay... so it's a horrendous title. But it's absolutely true! ;D
Anyway, enjoy. First scene on this MUCK with Renna, and I thought it was immensely fun.
Characters:
Renna - adult female wolf
Artemis - adult female wolf (N'queum)
Setting: Dusty Path (N'queum)
Through the growth of forest trees winds a faint dirt path, east to west. It has been made naturally over time, the comings and goings of various animals wearing away the vegetation and grass just enough to keep it from growing back in too much. It curves around larger trees, rises and falls with the flow of the earth. Different markings can be spottd in the dirt, though they tend to be fairly quickly destroyed as others move through: deer hooves, hare paws and, most notably, wolf paws. In fact, the scent of wolf is very heavy here. The trees and vegetation in this area have been clearly marked; this begins the territory of the N'queum wolf pack.
To the southwest rises Autumn Hill, a lovely spot to stand and survey N'queum territory. Following a dry stream bed to the east will lead one away from the N'queum's land.
Story:
Early afternoon finds it unseasonably warm for winter in northern Alaska. Though snow remains piled up amongst some of the trees in gentle banks, most of the fluffy white stuff has begun to melt away. Not that Artemis is all that concerned about the weather; she just randomly makes note of it as she lazily wanders the naturally worn path that winds toward the edge of her pack's territory. The she-wolf doesn't seem to be on any sort of border patrol or anything; she's at ease and relaxed, and though an ear will twitch towards any nearby sounds, she doesn't seem to be worried about much of anything. In fact, she only pauses to scratch idly at the ground, sniffing at the faint, but still lingering scent of the previous alpha female. Snorting to herself, Artemis scratches at the ground another time or two, keen to make sure HER scent is the dominant one here, at least.
It would be difficult to tell at first that Renna was the proud alpha female of her own pack, though upon a lengthier observation one might notice the remnants of what used to be a strong will and confidence, good instincts, and plenty of physical strength to go with it. But slinking through the trees with a barely-juvenile boypup behind her, Renna's presence carries more of a melancholy air, rather than the leadership she was known for. She pauses momentarily, senses straining to pick up any sign of other wolves in the area. Renna is no stranger to packland borders, and doesn't want any trouble. With a quick whisper to her son, she takes a hesitant step forward, still sniffsniffing and listening intently.
Satisfied that she has covered the old scent as best as she can for now, Artemis gives the spot one last glance before continuing forward. One would think that, being the granddaughter of one of N'queum's foremost alpha females (and looking just like her, or so she's been told) Artemis herself would look more the part of a leader. But this female tends to give off a more casual air, perhaps even slightly jovial. But all the qualities of a good alpha ARE there.. one just has to look a little harder to see them in Artemis, as she stubbornly refuses to act like anyone but herself: relaxed, casual, fun. The she-wolf's stroll down the path is halted after a few moments, ears perking alertly. She can sense someone - or something - else is in the area, though Renna is not quite in sight yet. Nostrils flaring, the only scents she picks up are from N'queum, and the earthy smell of surrounding forest; there is little to no breeze to blow scents her way. "Hello?"
The single word elicits an immediate reaction from Renna: another quick whisper--with an urgent undertone in her voice--and her son immediately finds nearby cover... a fallen log. The she-wolf backs up from the territorial boundary, tail lowering ever-so-slightly. In her expeirence, a little bit of forced humility goes a long way in preventing hostile confrontation--the /last/ thing she wants or needs right now. No... whoever just called out is not going to get any trouble from her, at least, not if she can help it. There's too much at stake for that. Without verbally responding, she backs up nearly to the log, hesitating slightly before deciding against sitting down. The more relaxed position takes too much time to respond from should this inevitable encounter turn bad and her son's life be placed in jeopardy. Nope; she'll remain on all four paws.
Artemis remains on the path, quite still except for the movement of her ears, for a long moment. The feeling that she's not alone in the area remains, so she presses forward, curious. There's no sound of grazing prey animals that she can pick up on, or the heavy breathing of a bear. It's as she comes around a tree that Artemis' nose catches the scent of another she-wolf, and another few steps brings Renna into view, with a few tail-lengths distance between them. A long second is spent staring across the way at Renna, and the N'queum alpha's tail rises.. and then falls back into a neutral position, giving a faint wag. She's not the sort for overt posturing and 'grr, I chew your face off' unless it's called for.. but there are times her mother's voice echoes in her head, as if trying to convince Artemis that she should ACT more like a proper leader when confronting a stranger so close to her home. Pfft! Artemis does things her own way. A small, but friendly smile curls along the she-wolf's slender muzzle. "Oh. Hullo, there! Didn't see you."
There are plenty of questions, assumptions, cautions, warnings, and curiosities all running through Renna's mind from the first glimpse of the other she-wolf up through the rather friendlier-than-expected greeting. Maybe she's just being paranoid, but Renna was expecting much more of a hostile--or a careful neutral at best--response and posture. Hmm. This may not be quite as bad as she thought it would be. Slowly dipping her head, Renna returns the greeting: "Good hunting to you." Careful now. "I ask only for safe passage across your packlands." Renna suppresses a wince--that still sounded a little too imposing in her own ears.
The lack of a hostile or imposing response from the opposite she-wolf thus encourages Artemis to not change her own posture. The alpha's ears cup forward at the request, and her nostrils flare slightly as she tries to pick up more of Renna's scent. But the smile remains, and Temi gives a small nod in response. "Well, that ain't too much to ask," She quips in reply. "Although there isn't much to be had beyond our other borders. Two rivers that are a bit risky to cross.. and the mountains to the north." A shoulder moves in a slight shrug. "'Less scaling mountains or swimming across big ol' rivers is your thing." She adds with a grin. Then, with a small, curious tilt of her head, "You hail from out that way?" Meaning on the other side of any of N'queum's other borders.
Big rivers and mountains? Hmm. Not exactly what Renna had in mind, but it just might work. She's not exactly in the best position to be picky right now, regardless. Her own ears perk up at the last question; she was wondering how long it would take before the typical and expected border curiosity took over for the other she-wolf. Without mentioning her son, though she's pretty sure his scent is noticeable, Renna describes herself as a rogue traveling through the area in search of better territory, and reiterates her desire for passage through N'queum, though she does include a slight probe for more information on what lies beyond the packlands. Rivers and mountains. A little more detail would be nice...
For the moment, Artemis does not pick up on the scent of the son. Either because there is no breeze to speak of, or Renna's scent covers his up enough, or both.. but his presence is still unknown to the N'queum alpha. The stranger she-wolf's tale is listened to with interest. There is a part of Artemis that actually misses being a rogue herself, being out and about in the world and seeing new sights all the time. Not to say that she isn't devoted to her pack; no, they are her family and there is nothing.. nothing.. that could convince her to give them up again. Frowning thoughtfully, Artemis turns her head to gaze off into the distance, deeper into N'queum territory, as she tries to recall what all lies beyond the other borders. "Not much in the mountains," She says. "They get trecherous pretty quickly. Beyond the southern river are pretty sheer cliffs. And open land beyond the western border.. but much of that was destroyed by fire not too long ago, I hear." Another pause as Temi reconsiders all she has said, before bright green eyes focus on the rogue she-wolf, the faint beginnings of suspicion creeping into her gaze. Gosh, has she said too much? "Why do you want to know?"
The tentative probe, as Renna let it go out bit by tiny bit, finally seems to have hit the suspicious nerve she knew would be there. Time to withdraw the probe and salvage the situation. "Surely you can understand a rogue's interest in the lay of the land... I must make decisions about where to travel to next, after all." That and know what kind of dangers might be waiting for her son. If only he were a bit older, wiser, and stronger... she might be willing to take more risks. But he's still far too young for her to just gamble on these seemingly-foreboding mountains holding any promise for the two of them. Renna gives the other she-wolf a small smile, trying to disarm any of the other's hostility that might be creeping in. "My intentions toward you and your pack are entirely peaceful; you have nothing to worry about."
Artemis eyes the other female another moment, but finally smiles, the suspicion held in her eyes gone in the time it takes her to blink. Her smile stretches into a toothy grin, and a friendly nod offered. "Had t'ask, you understand.." She says simply. It's hard trying to balance her own natural easy-going attitude with the small part of her that is paranoid that the pack might fall into poor paws so soon after she returned to help them out of such a state. Especially knowing that expectations on her are somewhat high, given that older members of the pack believe she looks exactly like her grandmother, Luna. It's hard to shake those expectations when many seem to believe that looking like the former alphess means thinking and acting just like her as well. Giving herself a quick shake, Artemis nods towards the west. "Well, you're welcome to go poking about the other borders, see if what's beyond them is what you're looking for." The other female seems nice enough.. and besides, there isn't really any other way to reach the other borders in a round about way outside of N'queum. "I'm Artemis, by the way. My pack and our lands are the N'queum."
"I'm Renna of--and it's an.. an honor to meet you." Not the biggest verbal blunder she's ever made, but it definitely comes at a rather inopportune time. A weak smile doesn't really seem like a good enough cover, so Renna switches to another question. "The N'queum? Can't say I've ever heard of them, though.. I guess that's not too surprising since I'm new to this area." A dozen other thoughts also surfaced but she has /no/ intention of asking--mostly logistical inquiries on the pack's size, strength, territorial boundaries, demeanor toward outsiders, and so forth. This initial contact with Artemis is a start, but for all Renna knows she might be the nicest wolf in an otherwise hostile and aggressive pack. Now, if she would just kindly move along before discovering the presence of a much younger wolf, still dutifully lying prone behind the fallen log.
"A pleasure, Renna." Artemis' ears perk, but if she caught the other she-wolf's blunder, she says nothing. Her tail swinging in a light wag, Temi nods. "Mm. Yeah, we've been in this area for a few generations now." She pauses, looking skyward as she tries to recall family history and whatnot that she could share. The thought never crosses her mind that such knowledge might be dull to a stranger, but luckily, she draws a fuzzy blank. She always was more interested in chasing grasshoppers than listening to a bunch of old farts tell dull tales! "Can't recall how far back, but we've been around. My mother could probably recite it all off the top of her head, the sly old bat." The quip about her mother is spoken with the sort of fondness a grown child often has for a parent; the pack is close-knit. "Which reminds me.. I'll let everyone know you've got my OK to be wandering about. They shouldn't give you any real trouble." She turns slightly, as if about to start walking away, but pauses. "Weeeelll.. my younger brother might try to question you to death. Pups, eh?" She smirks, rolling her eyes playfully. A very close-knit pack. Again she starts to move, and again pauses to look questioningly over at the other she-wolf. "I was just going to head back into pack territory. Would you like to come along? I could show you along to the other borders."
Renna lets herself relax a little as the other wolf speaks. This is definitely turning out to be easier than she thought it would be. As long as the pack members don't harass them, the former alpha will be satisfied. The other's mention of 'pups' causes a brief smile to flit across Renna's muzzle, though she doesn't give any other reaction to betray the presence of her son. But wait... Artemis wants to accompany her, now? That certainly won't work--it's a miracle her son hasn't been spotted so far, but if they have to start moving, there's no question he'll be detected. But how to ease gracefully out of the invitation? Renna's mind works urgently, but without panic. She's been in tight situations before, and learned a long time ago that leadership is not possible if she can't control the direction of her own thoughts. Adopting a grateful tone, she replies, "I do appreciate the offer, but.. I'm actually thinking about resting here for a while. Maybe if.. you came back tomorrow?" That'll give her enough time to decide on their next move, whether it be through N'queum or in another direction.
Artemis apparently does not find the refusal odd or rude; after all, the other she-wolf is a stranger and a rogue, so there's no need to force her into N'queum territory. And as a former rogue herself, Artemis always did feel safer resting outside other pack lands. Her head dips in a nod of acknowledgement. "As you wish. If you're not here when I come 'round tomorrow, I'll assume you've moved on." A smile again forms on the alpha's muzzle. "In which case I'll wish you safe travels and good hunting."
Renna is taken somewhat aback. She knows that if she were in the other's place, she'd be feeling a lot more suspcious--though it is entirely possible that the other wolf is just good at masking her own feelings on this encounter. Either way, Renna decides to take the friendly farewell at face value, and dips her head in return. "Good hunting to you as well, Artemis of N'queum." With that, she settles down into a comfortable sitting position as she waits for the departure of the other she-wolf. Not until Renna's satisfied that she's gone will her son be allowed to move or speak. No sense in taking chances, right?
A smile and a nod from the N'queum female, and Artemis turns and pads quietly back down the path to the west, heading off into the depths of her territory. She's going to make it a point to make sure her pack knows of the rogue she-wolf, so that - should Renna take to exploring N'queum on her own - there will hopefully be no aggressive confrontations. The last seen of her is the tip of her tail as the path rises in a small hill and she travels up.. and over.. and is gone.
Anyway, enjoy. First scene on this MUCK with Renna, and I thought it was immensely fun.
